Brandenburg Gate
Brandenburger Tor is the symbol of the unification of Germany, and it was here that the great celebration took place 9th November 1989, when the wall was opened. The gate was built between 1788 and 1791, and four years later a quadriga (four horses with a carriage) and the Goddess of Victory were added. Between 1806 and 1814 the quadriga and the goddess were in Paris with Napoleon, but became tired of him and returned when he had lost power. Because of the war with Napoleon the goddess received an Iron Cros, a laurel crown and a Prussian eagle by her side. During World War II the Brandenburger Tor was damaged, but the West and the East repaired the monument together. When the DDR (GDR) existed the Eagle and the Iron Cross were placed elsewhere, because of what they thought people associated with these two symbols. Today they have returned and everyone thinks of the reunification.
