Vildmarksvägen and Norway 2026

My father had wanted to travel along Vildmarksvägen for quite some time, and when he asked if I wanted to come along, I immediately said yes.

On Wednesday, July 22, we drove to Vilhelmina, the starting point of Vildmarksvägen. We bought some Jokkmokkakorv (Jokkmokk sausage) and headed west, making several stops along the way. The first major attraction was Trappstegsforsen ("The Stair-Step Rapids"), a magnificent series of cascading rapids flowing down natural rock terraces. It was an impressive sight.

Our next major stop was Saxnäs, a small village with a beautiful church. A few kilometers west of Saxnäs, we also visited Fiskonfallet ("Fiskon Falls"), a charming waterfall. We then continued to Fatmomakke, a Sámi church village. There were traditional Sámi tipis alongside the church and several other historic buildings. I bought two beautiful wooden cups there as souvenirs.

In Klimpfjäll, we enjoyed delicious hamburgers at the hotel restaurant before continuing towards Stekenjokk, and the alpine plateau. The weather was exceptionally clear, and we visited the concrete bunker at the summit. From there, we drove south towards Gäddede and the Norwegian border. In Norway we visited Sandvika in the municipality of Lierne. I wanted to take a new region in Turf—Trøndelag—and after that we returned to Gäddede. After a while, we took a shortcut and drove home via Hoting and Dorotea, ending a memorable trip through one of Sweden's most spectacular scenic roads.
