Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche |
Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche is not easily pronounced, but with some practice it is possible to get it right. The church was consecrated in 1895, but was bombed during WWII, just like many buildings in Berlin. There were plans to tear the church down after the war, but the West Berliners were fond of their church, so it was decided that the tower could remain. But the church had to be rebuilt one way or the other. The new, totally modern church was finished in the 1960s. The bell tower can be seen in front of the old church, but the present one is hidden in the background in picture 1. The Berliners have a predilection for giving strange, and in some cases apt, nicknames to their sights. These three buildings are the hollow tooth, the lipstick and the compact. |
