Nikolaiviertel -Altstadt (Old Town) from 1987!
During the 1980s the DDR (GDR)- leaders opted for an Old Town in the center of East Berlin. All other cities in Germany had one, at least from 1945, so why not Berlin? The architect was Günter Stahn, and almost every house was built anew, just a few were restored. The idea was of course to recreate an altstadt feeling that could compete with the West. No services have been held in the Nikolai Church since 1938, and it is today a museum.
