Potsdam |
Potsdam is a suburb to the south-west of Berlin, but actually the capital of the state of Brandenburg. Potsdam houses many things worth seeing: Sanssouci, Cecilienhof and Brandenburger Tor (Gate). Sanssouci (literally without sorrow) was of course built in the 18th century. It was Friedrich der Grosse (Frederick the Great) that wanted this building. In 1744 it was decided to create a vineyard in the area, and a year later the work with the castle began. Cecilienhof is more like a big summerhouse, in which Churchill (later succeeded by Attlee), Truman and Stalin met in order to decide over the future of Germany. Brandenburger Tor is in fact older than its namesake in the city of Berlin, and is like the name suggests the gate to Brandenburg. |
