Leipzig |
Leipzig has so much to offer: fantastic shopping, fine monuments and a few villages closely connected with Swedish history, namely Breitenfeld and Lützen. Leipzig is the biggest city in Saxony, but despite that it is not the capital. Instead Dresden has the honour. Leipzig played a big role in bringing down the state of GDR (DDR) in 1989. It was around St Thomas Church it all began, when people gathered every Monday to protest against the regime. The tall building is the University Library, which is formed like an open book. Battle of the Nations Monument, Völkerschlachtdenkmal in German, was erected in 1913, which was exactly 100 years after the battle against Napoleon. Over 110,000 people died, and the memorial water in front of the monument symbolizes the tears of all their families. The most famous son of Leipzig is of course the composer Johann Sebastian Bach, who has his grave in St Thomas Church, as can be seen in one of the pictures. Another highlight is the Auerbach's Cellar which was mentioned in Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. |
